Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show on February 14 near Los Angeles, the NFL announced. The announcement confirms a long-standing speculation, as Carter has previously served in a producer role rather than as the main act.
Roc Nation, Carter's company, has produced the halftime show since 2019. The organization plays a key part in selecting the annual performer, but Carter has never performed at the NFL championship game before. The league did not clarify if he will be the sole headliner for the upcoming event.
The news broke after Carter performed two concerts at the Los Angeles stadium that will host Super Bowl LXI. Those shows were part of a tour marking the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he was excited for fans to see the artist's work. He noted that when Roc Nation agreed to produce the show, his only request was for Carter to perform personally whenever he felt the timing was right.
Carter described the opportunity as a dream come true, linking his career span to this moment. The NFL also noted that anticipation for potential guest stars has begun, specifically mentioning his wife, Beyoncé, as a top candidate.
