Harry Kane accepted the Ballon d'Or in London on Monday, concluding a season defined by a historic scoring output. The award resolves a long-standing question about the striker's individual accolades, placing the trophy in the hands of a player who dominated the 2025-26 campaign.

Kane’s achievement marks a return of the prize to England for the first time since 2001, when Michael Owen last claimed the honor. At 33, Kane adds the award to a record that already lists him as England’s all-time top scorer and their leading World Cup goalscorer.

The selection came despite strong competition from Kylian Mbappe, who broke World Cup scoring records, and Lamine Yamal, who helped Spain secure the World Cup title. Voters favored Kane for his consistency, citing a season with few periods of decline and a high volume of decisive goals.

Kane’s move to Bayern Munich in 2023 coincided with a surge in team success. In the 2025-26 season, the German club won a domestic league and cup double. Kane contributed 61 goals in 51 matches for the club, finishing as Europe’s leading goalscorer.

His international performance reinforced his candidacy. At the World Cup, Kane scored six goals and guided England to the semi-finals. His total across club and international duties reached 73 goals, a figure that is rare in modern football.

Kane acknowledged the strength of his peers during his acceptance speech. He described the experience as "extra special" due to the London venue and thanked the voters. He noted that the decision was difficult given the presence of "some world-class players in the room tonight."

In the women's category, Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d'Or Féminin for the third time. The Spain midfielder earned the recognition after leading Barcelona to a treble and the Spanish Super Cup in 2025-26. In July, she left Barcelona after 14 years to sign with London City Lionesses in the Women's Super League.
